More than Gold at the Bottom of this Rainbow – Book Delights all Ages

Shhhh…listen. Sniff, sniff…smell. Breathe…love.

Written for children, but inspiring to all is author Kathy Parra’s Love is the Color of a Rainbow. The book takes us on a delightful and sensory-filled journey with Willow and her Mama that connects readers to these two characters and the joy they discover in nature.

Willow is a special young girl who cannot see with her eyes, but instead sees through her other senses. She teaches readers about how much we can experience if we take the time and open ourselves to our world, nature and a helping hand.

My children we’re happy to join Willow in her dance through the rain with Mama. We find that Nature speaks to Mama who has the ears to hear it and we learn about how colors can make us feel emotions. Green is gentle, Red gives us energy, and Indigo is joyous.

Parra has written a charming and thoughtful book for every age made visual by beautiful illustrations by Candace Keach. Readers will find solice and happiness in this sweet book, sure to become a well-worn family favorite.

Happy reading!

Green Easter – all natural egg dyes

Easter and the royal wedding are a few weeks off. Time to get ready!

This Easter consider using all natural dyes made from spices from the pantry, fruits and veggies. It’s a no-fuss, no-cash proposition that will keep egg hunting and eating chemical free. Here’s how!

Pick a color and corresponding spice and pop it in some boiling water until you have the color you like. As you’ll find when using Paas or other conventional egg dye, the color in the pot will be darker than the acutal dyed egg. Account for that for depth of color.

When you like the color, take off heat, strain the color into a glass bowl and add 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar (or whatever you have on hand). Let the dye cool and drop in your eggs. Let eggs soak until you have the color you want.

Here are the spices and produce for the colors. Don’t forget to try fruit dye too! Frozen blueberries are tasty and fun!

Blue/Purple: blueberries, red cabbage

Yellow: turmeric, cumin

Orange: paprika

Red: red onion skins, raspberries, strawberries

Brown: chili powder, dill seeds, coffee grounds or coffee from the morning cuppa

Happy Easter!!

Satsuma Designs Moderates CRAVE Chat

Can you identify your strengths? What about your weaknesses? This month, CRAVE wants to help you capitalize on what you do best with a valuable lesson learned by our founder, Melody Biringer, over many years and many businesses. An important part of staying at the top of your game is to ONLY do what you do best and to outsource your weaknesses to people who actually excel at them. Bookkeeping, web development, and graphic design are prime examples of tasks you’re betting off delegating to pros if you’re not one yourself. We know this is scary! Knowing where to go and who to trust can be difficult, but this chat strives to ease the fear and discomfort and get you pumped about focusing on your passion! Get ready to embrace your strengths and do more of what you CRAVE!

Satsuma Designs’ Jennifer Porter will moderate this important discussion on how to keep is simple and successful!

When Snow Falls, It’s All Business – Eco-Friendly Kids’ Snowy Day Activities

Out here in the Pacific NW we’re bracing for snowfall. I’m wracking my brain for post-sledding, pre-nap activities for the little Satsumas. One recently came to me with the help of my little businessman.

For potentially endless hours of fun, writing practice and discussions of domestic and international business, consider up-cycling your unused bill envelopes (or direct mail envelopes) to use in ‘office play’. Set up a small card table for the kids add a couple of chairs and complete the scene with a pen/pencil box, plenty of white letter paper and those old envelopes. Help junior and junior miss write fun and funny notes to CEOs, your local city council reps, even Congressman. Start the dialogue early about engaging in public affairs and communicating when you feel the need. If a few smiley faces make the letter, so much the better. Smiles are great for diplomacy!

Seal those letters up and either deliver them to each other, a neighbor, or teacher on the next non-snow day.

Stay warm and enjoy!

10 Tips for Clean, Green, Eco-Serene Laundry

Not many love it, but there may perhaps be something satisfying about conquering the endless cycle of Satsuma Designs Bambib - organic cotton and bamboo baby biblaundry that comes with a family, pairs and singles. Who’s ready to confess that finally slaying the dump, sort, wash, dry, fold, put away dragon feels mighty nice?

Make it even nicer by keeping it green and eco-clean. Here are some tips to keep the family looking and smelling fresh and keep the salmon swimming.

1. Only machine wash in full loads in cold water or warm for whites
2. Line dry when weather and time permits
3. Machine wash once per week – even an active family of four should be able to accomplish this goal in 4-6 loads (one FULL load per person plus linens and a delicates)
4. Hand wash and line dry delicates (no machine washing as suggested above)
5. Use an enviro-friendly wash detergent that’s phosphate, chlorine and the other ‘nasties’-free 6. Make your own all natural washing machine detergent with a recipe of soap flakes, washing soda and borax
7. Spot clean apparel and toys with lemon juice and set out in sunshine – for colder, clear winter and fall days, simply lay items in a sunny window for the same result.
8. Dress and sleep in all natural fibers
9. Choose naturally anti-bacterial fabrics such as bamboo rayon
10. Fluff or time dry in dryer

Tighter fold please.

Snack Attack Goes Green

Pack a ton of nutrients, stave off hunger and feel great about the good work you’re doing for the old bod. Try this little snack mix that keeps the team at Satsuma Designs working and playing hard with the little satsumas.

Satsuma Snack Mix
- 2 handfuls organic roasted almonds (no salt)
- 2 handfuls pepitas (the inside of a pumpkin seed – incredible source of iron for a little seed!)
- 1/2 a handful chopped brazil nuts (only need a little of this to get the great benefit of selenium)
- 1 handful dried cranberries (can sub raisins or whatever’s in the pantry in terms of dried fruit)
- 1 and a dash more handful of dark chocolate chips or chunks (try chopping your favorite semi-sweet bar into this)

Combine in a reusable baggie like ReUsies or old jam jar with top. Mix it up and enjoy!!

All Natural Baby Powder for More than Babies

Mix up your own non-toxic, green and clean baby powder with this simple recipe. Find a favorite sugar shaker, salt shaker or cleaned jam jar with punched holes and combine:

1/4 cup cornstarch
10-12 drops of favorite essential oil – lavender, lemon, orange

Consider this Pampered Chef shaker with top or scour your local thrift store or pantry and up-cycle using an old jam jar with a few holes punched. Hot glue some ribbons around the jar to coordinate with your baby’s nursery.

Here’s to clean tushies and more!!
