DIY Felt Ornament and Mobile

Crazy fun and cute crafting project for girls and boys. I love this project because it draws from scrap fabric and supplies on hand and can be adapted to whatever you need: season, party, colors, hobby, and more.

This would be a super fun party craft too. You could go nuts on a theme! LOVE!

Here's what you need for your DIY Felt Ornament and Mobile

  • Felt - scraps or new stuff - either is great.
  • Stuffing - poly fill will work best, but if you're in a tight spot, you can use crumpled up newspaper, tissue paper, paper towel or tissue.
  • Thread - embroidery thread will work best as it's easy for kids to handle and thread the needle. Choose a coordinating or contrasting thread depending on your project and/or mood.
  • Large, but sharp tipped needle - use your embroidery needle.
  • Ribbon - use a fine width satin or gros grain ribbon to hang your mobile.
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun and glue
  • Large popsicle sticks (2), Mason jar ring (1), twigs from your yard (2)

* If you decide to make 4-5 ornaments and make a mobile, then you'll combine your popsicle sticks or items in the list above into a cross then hang your ornaments from these.

Here's how to make your DIY Felt Ornament and Mobile

Start by cutting our your felt ornament shape(s). Cut two identical layers.

Here are some ideas:

  • Cloud
  • Sun
  • Bow
  • Heart
  • Tree
  • Flower
  • Leaves (combine these with a couple of flowers for your mobile)
  • Santa hat
  • Kitty with pointy ears

Basically any cookie cutter shape you have on hand could be your template and inspiration.

Now, thread your needle and start stitching a running stitch for a high cute quotient. Here's a quick and easy running stitch tutorial for reference.

Stop sewing when you have about 1/2" or 1" of an opening left to stuff your ornament. Push in your stuffing. Use the eraser end of a pencil or chopstick to push all your stuffing in.

Now sew closed.

Then, glue your ribbon to the top of your ornament. Try to put the ribbon between layers for a clean look.

If you want to add ribbons from the bottom do the same here.

Et voila! C'est tout.
