DIY Rainbow Scratch Art

Home schooling with the Covid 19 pandemic has challenged our family in so many ways. One silver lining is the creativity that's emerging from my little homebound students!

I'm so thankful to share a DIY rainbow scratch art project spearheaded by my youngest student with help from another kiddo on YouTube.

This DIY rainbow scratch art is truly process art. This project asks your artist to create the actual medium and canvas and then share another layer of expression in scratching her/his designs.

Scratch Art Variations

Have fun creating a variety of canvases for your scratch art. Try:

  • Aluminum foil covered card stock or chip board
  • Colored construction paper
  • Tissue paper confetti dropped onto a glue stick covered sheet of paper
  • Water color painted paper
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Decoupage card stock with magazine images

What else can you dream up to create fantastic backdrops for your scratch art?

How to Make DIY Rainbow Scratch Art

It's hard to decide which step in the process of making DIY rainbow scratch art is the most fun.

Materials

  • Paper - white copy paper or card stock is great
  • Coloring devices - pens, pencils, paint, etc.
  • Wide crystal clear packing tape - 2" wide? Whatever you have on hand.
  • Black acrylic paint
  • Paint brush(es)
  • Mechanical pencil, end of a narrow paintbrush, bamboo skewer or stylus for the scratching!

To make your own scratch art, start out by using markers, colored pencils, water color paints or even pastels to fill an 8.5" x 11" piece of white paper with color.

You and your artist can freeform here!

Make a rainbow of colors.

Color block the page.

Create designs within designs.

Spell out words and phrases of meaning to you.

Next, cover the full page with the packing tape being careful to line up each edge of the tape nicely and cleanly next to the others.

Wrap the excess tape around the back of the page too.

Now, paint the full page with the black acrylic paint.

Keep your brush stokes going in the same direction and try to make sure your paint coverage is even.

Let your paint dry...patiently.

Grab your dry page, pull out your scratching tool - pencil, skewer, toothpick - and have fun making colorful designs.

Enjoy!!
