Paper Mache Christmas Ornaments

Paper Mache Christmas Ornaments

I've loved paper mache since elementary school and am now teaching my kids the fun of the craft! My paper mache Christmas ornaments are easy and fun to make. The most difficult part of this project is knowing when to stop!

I've made a few simple shapes in this tutorial including a heart, robin, toadstool and star. In each case I started with crumpled newspaper and shaped by hand and using standard masking tape.

Next, I whisked up some paper mache glue and cut some day old newspaper into strips about 1" wide by 10" long. When the paper is dipped into the paper mache glue it's very easy to break and use just the right length.

Once I had my basic shapes - heart and toadstool - that I knew I wanted to hang, I taped a bit of baker's twine to the top of the shape. I added my glue strips over the twine and tape so I could easily hang the ornaments when dried and painted.

More Paper Mache

If you're ready to graduate to more complicated shapes you can use all kinds of bits and bobs around the house. Try wrapping high gauge craft wire with paper, tape over it, then add paper mache glue strips.

Or go classic and use balloons to create all sorts of spheres to hang from the ceiling or thread for a garland.
