DIY reusable Swiffer Wet Jet mop pads are easy to sew with just a couple of materials that you likely have in your craft pin. Stop paying for mop pads that get dumped in the landfill and clean with a clear conscience! #lifehack #ecofriendly #greenclean #cleaning #cleanhouse #moppad #swiffer #wetjet

Materials You'll Need

  • Old (or new) heavy terrycloth washcloth, hand towel or bath towel - use anything you have on hand. I've used a cotton dishtowel as well. The idea here is that you're not purchasing anything new to create you reusable Swiffer/mop pad.
  • 2 strips of 1" to 2" wide by length of soft sided half (loop) of velcro or hook and loop
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Tailor's chalk or pen/pencil
  • Sewing clips or pins
  • Scissors or rotary cutter
  • If using a rotary cutter, cutting mat
  • If sewing by hand, needle and thread in coordinating or contrasting color

Pro Tip: You can add another strip of loop to the bottom of your mop pad for extra cleaning power. Use the soft loop side as the hook can be overly abrasive on softer wood or tile floors.

Best Ways to Optimize Reusable Cleaning Supplies

Use light colored upcycled materials so that you can see the residue you pick up with each cleaning.

Create reusable cleaning supplies that can be flipped or folded to work twice during one cleaning session.

Store an ample supply of dry reusable cloths along with eco-friendly cleaning solutions.

Try this Hard Working All-Natural Wood Floor and Ceramic Tile Cleaning Solution

To make your cleaning mix, combine the first 3 items below in a spray bottle or shallow pan such as an aluminum baking dish that is only used for cleaning purposes - NOT with food.

If using a spray bottle, spray a bit of solution in a corner to test. If using the pan, do the same.

  • 1 Tsp castile soap such as Dr. Bronner's
  • 4 cups water
  • 5-10 drops of your favorite, fresh and clean smelling essential oil such as citrus, lavender, herbs (optional)
  • Small pan or tray to accommodate the dimensions of your Swiffer to lightly submerge or spray bottle, depending on your preference
  • Swiffer with reusable mop pads

Refuse Recycling

When making your own reusable cleaning supplies is not an option or if you already have a supply of Swiffer brand pads, you can benefit from recycling options from Procter & Gamble Co.'s (P&G) partnership with Terracycle.

Terracycle is a really innovative company that is helping businesses and consumer recycle and gently dispose of hard to recycle refuse.

How To Make Your Reusable Swiffer Mop Pads

To make your own reusable Swiffer mop pads, you can follow along with the video below or use these written instructions.

Start by setting up your work space with a cutting mat or table protection.

Measure your Swiffer head to determine the size of your reusable mop pad.

You'll need measurements of the following:

  • Rectangular base - approx 10.5" x 4.75" - Swiffer Wet Jet head

When you have your dimensions in hand, cut 2 layers of the rectangle and 2 layers of the smaller square size TIMES TWO (folded) out of your terry cloth or cotton.

Next you'll sew your two strips of loop of the hook and loop (velcro) material onto the long edges of one layer of rectangular fabric.

Sew the strips approximately 2" from each other, centered.

Place right sides together and sew, leaving one short end open to turn right side out.

Turn right side, out and sew closed.

That's it! You're ready to Swiffer.
