How to Host an Organic Baby Shower

What better way to welcome a new baby into the world than with an all-natural party to celebrate Mom and her growing bundle. Here are ideas on how to host an organic baby shower that calls on neutral, green baby shower themes to get your creative juices flowing.

Invitations Give a nod to the mom-to-be with a personalized DIY seed packet invitation that's filled with the beginnings of her favorite wild flower or easily seeded veggie. Try this tutorial to create your own seed packet from pretty paper on hand. No need to shell out cash for this element when you use wallpaper, wrapping paper, kraft or construction paper, even velum. Depending on your design and length of your guest list, use Sharpies and hand letter each invitation or print your text onto your DIY seed packet before you assemble the sides with glue.

Menu When planning a baby shower always take the mom-to-be's food preferences and aversions into account and design a menu to please mommy and guests. Opt for the freshest ingredients you can find and consider hitting your local farmer's market to score straight from the farm produce and goodies. Remember to go easy on the soft cheeses, but stock up on crusty breads, farm fresh eggs, jams and pastries and produce for a fruit and green salad to satisfy. Design recipes that are balanced with protein, carbs and fats to keep mom and guests feeling great after the meal.

Decor Pick a theme and go for it! One way to keep the decor expenses and waste footprint to a minimum is to upcycle with elements on hand. Raid your own fabric stash and/or ask guests or friends for their contribution in the shower theme colors. Neutral yellow and green are fun for an eco-chic baby shower and can be passed on to mom-to-be for use in the nursery. Avoid decor that will be trashed after the party and think about elements that can be reused and enjoyed: bunting, banners, new cloth napkins, napkin rings, table runners, glass charms and more are fun to make and easy on the budget.

Party Treats For an all green and organic baby shower, treat guests with party favors and elements that they can enjoy at the event and beyond. Consider combining a place setting with a party favor that will enhance the tablescape and delight guests to know they'll take a little piece of the party home. Try a folded flower on a rustic branch with a hand tied name tag - created using one of Satsuma Designs' bamboo flannel wash cloths that are a great beauty staple. Plant a little green succulent in a hand lettered terra cotta pot for an easy gift that will stand up to any black thumb!

Baby Shower Gift Registry Whether or not your mom-to-be is registered online or at a local baby or maternity store, it's nice to know what she needs to get her green nursery in order. As you're planning your fete, jot down her wishes and mention to guests. If you and your guest of honor are comfortable, you can mention the baby shower gift registry in your seed packet invitation, but don't feel obliged to do so.

Have fun going off registry too if the spirit moves you and be sure to pick up a selection of items - baby toys, baby apparel, baby board books, and supplies - that will delight mom-to-be. Choose natural fabrics and materials when hosting your organic baby shower. Opt for natural wooden toys, natural fiber materials like you'll find here at Satsuma Designs.

Have fun and combine your decor with your gifts and create a diaper, wash cloth, burp cloth and apparel 'cake' or cupcake display for mom-to-be. Find materials here at Satsuma Designs!
