7 Quick Ways to Start a Great Blog Post

Keyword Question

Consider using your keyword and/or title in the form of a question.

For example, if I'm working a post titled Virtual Classroom Etiquette for Kids, I would open my blog post with: 'Could you use a few tips on virtual classroom etiquette for kids?'

This method brings your keyword phrase to the beginning of your post, which is great for SEO and invites the reader in to your message.

Timely Beginnings

While it's important to keep your blog content 'evergreen' and relevant for future reading, it's also appropriate to reflect the time in which you're writing.

For this reason, it's a great to start a blog post reflecting on a current trend, holiday or event.

For example, if I'm writing about hosting a Fourth of July party with friends and family, I can begin my post with some information about the holiday or my experiences.

I might write, 'July 4th in our family is a raucous blend of color, food, family and fireworks. We love it! Here's the easy and festive ways we celebrate each Independence Day.'

Problem + Solution

Successful blog posts solve some kind of problem. Granted, the 'problem' might be as mild as what to serve for dinner, but we all know that tasty new recipes are a great solution to the weekly meal plan!

Start a blog post by offering an immediate remedy to a real or perceived issue.

For example, a title might go like this, 'Drowning in too much kids' artwork? Let me share my best method to calm the chaos and celebrate your little artist's work at the same time.

Celebratory Opening

Most of us love a party and the joy that comes with celebrating milestones and other holidays is infectious.

Share your enthusiasm in your blog post's first sentence and you're sure to have readers joining you!

Ignite Imagination

Invite readers to 'picture themselves' doing X, Y or Z related to your blog post. Help your audience see themselves doing, enjoying, learning and engaging in the content that you are sharing.

Quote an Expert

Regardless of your blog's topic, it's a welcome invitation to great content when you begin your post with an informative or inspiring quote from an industry leader.

Set a Scene

When writing a post about a topic, it's an excellent practice to show instead of telling a reader what you want to communicate.

Use language that draws your audience in with description and emotion rather than instruction on why they may or may not need your content.

For example, 'Cherry blossoms fell like snow and birds chirped their good morning when I got inspired to create these easy to make birdseed ornaments to hang in our backyard.'

If I read this, I would be transported to a leafy backyard. You too?
