Easy Toasted Sesame Bagel Recipe
This recipe is so easy that I made them daily for one full week. I wanted to perfect the recipe AND spoil my family.
I hope you enjoy your own fresh out of the oven bagels like we do!
- 2/3 cup warm water
- 1/2 TBS granulated sugar
- 1.5 tsp fast-acting Rapid Rise yeast - use 1 tsp for high-altitude baking
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 TBS vegetable oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 1 TBS water
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Start by adding water to a large glass mixing bowl.
- Add yeast to water then add the sugar to the bowl, stir to combine.
- Let sit for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
- Add the oil, flour and salt and use your hands to combine into a dough that is tacky.
- Form the dough into a ball and let rest in the bowl a warm place with a kitchen towel placed over the top for 30 minutes.
- Fun tip! I proof (let rise) my bagel dough in front of the gas fireplace for 30 minutes.
- When dough has about doubled in size, take it out of the bowl and place on a large floured surface.
- Knead dough with flour until it's soft and smooth.
- Next, use a serrated knife to cut dough into 6 equal parts.
- Roll each of the 6 pieces into logs about 8" in length.
- Dab your fingertips with water and connect the ends of the dough log to form a ring.
- Set aside on a lightly floured surface to rise for another 30 minutes.
- When bagel rings have proofed again, fill a medium sized pot 1/3 full with water.
- Bring water to a boil AND preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
- Gently drop 3 bagels in at a time and boil on either side for 30 seconds.
- Pull from boiling water with a slotted spoon and let rest on paper towels to dry.
- When all bagels have had their water bath for a minute and are drying, brush each bagel with egg wash.
- Egg wash: mix one egg with one TBS water.
- Top bagels with toasted sesame seeds (or whatever topping you love).
- Bake for 20 minutes at 425 degrees F.
- Remove from oven, let cool, then eat! Toast or slice right open and enjoy!
