As the back to school season approaches and the long summer days shorten, I am working on how we'll hit the playground running this fall!

One of my strategies includes a school lunch and snack packing zone. In addition to being a one-stop 'shop' for our family to pack lunch and snack, I've found it's a great way to teach responsibility and well-balanced meal planning for our kids.

Thankfully, we have a deep and wide drawer next to the refrigerator, which makes a perfect lunch and snack packing zone. I stock it with the kids (and my!) favorite items that will keep them refreshed and full throughout the day.

From morning class time to afternoon sports and activities, I ask the kids to plan ahead and grab their DASANI water bottles, POWERADE sports drink and Lance crackers along with their fruits, veggies and protein to round out a complete day of nourishment.

Easily Create a Lunch and Snack Packing Zone

In addition to stocking your packing zone with the best beverages and foods, there are some easy tips to employ to make the system run smoothly.

  • Use appropriately sized bins and baskets to hold smaller items. Use dollar store finds!
  • Put first things first by providing lunch boxes and packaging to use as a foundation as the kids run through the food checklist.
  • Include beverages and non-perishable food in your lunch packing zone.
  • Pre-wash fruits to store in your lunch packing zone.
  • Remind kids with a visual cue to hit the fridge for their protein and vegetables.
  • Have pre-washed and cut vegetables on hand to make it easy to get the proper servings each day.
  • Have ice packs at hand in the freezer to keep everything fresh for the day.
  • Double check their work and add a sweet note to their lunch box.
