Halloween Sprinkle Cupcake Toppers
Oh, how I love the Halloween season! It's not just the candy that gets me going, it's the festive energy that we share as a family discussing Halloween costumes, trick-or-treating, decorating and the Halloween party we'll host. For this year's Halloween party we'll be serving vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with my Halloween sprinkle cupcake toppers.
These easy to make sprinkle cupcake toppers were inspired by all the amazing work we see on our favorite Kids Baking Championship show. If you haven't tuned in with your little baking ghouls, it's time! See what Duff and Val have to say about all the great young talent. I tried bats, but they didn't land so I opted for the more successful pumpkins with leaves and sparkly white ghosts!
Candy Not Corn
To make my Halloween sprinkle cupcake toppers I start by prepping at jelly roll pan or cookie sheet with a piece of parchment paper. Next, I melt down a cup and a half of candy melts in a microwave proof bowl.
When the candy melts are nice and soft and easy to stir, about 2 minutes total, I use a spatula to put them into a piping bag. To make it extra easy, I place my piping bag in a pint glass with the bag edges wrapped over the top of the glass and spoon in my melted candy melts.
Then I fold the top of my piping bag over a couple of times to secure and start twisting the bag. I snip the end of the bag off with a pair of scissors and start my candy art!

I sketch a few shapes onto a piece of scratch paper that I have on hand so that I have a visual to work with when piping my candy melts onto the parchment paper. I work just a couple of candy shapes at a times so that I can sprinkle on my sanding sugar when the candy melts are nice and soft and still melty.
I let the sprinkled candy rest for about 10 minutes to fully cool. When finished, I top my cupcakes or store in an airtight container for a couple of days before my party.
Here's What You'll Need to Make your own Halloween Sprinkle Cupcake Toppers
- White candy melts (or any color that you like for ghostly creatures!)
- Microwave safe bowl
- Spatula
- Frosting Piping Bag
- Pint glass or other tall vessel such as a narrow vase (to add the candy melts easily to your piping bag)
- Scissors
- Cookie Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- Sanding sugar and/or sprinkles
- Scratch paper
- Pen or pencil (to sketch topper art as reference)
Technique Is The Trick
I love the effect of the sprinkles that adds a festive flair to whatever I top. This technique can be used for any shape and occasion. Try holiday shapes such as trees, ornaments and holly. For springtime Easter, pipe out little bunny heads, flowers and leaves. When a birthday comes along, make happy little charms for the birthday kiddo in a variety of shapes to share with friends in the classroom or at a party.
