How To Easily Make Paper Cherry Blossom Branches

We are so fortunate to have many beautiful varieties of cherry trees in the Pacific Northwest. They bloom each March and April and show us that springtime and sunny skies really are a possibility in our rainy corner of the country!

Even the petal snow that falls when the blooms bid adieu are lovely to watch float to the ground.

I'm sharing my paper cherry blossom branches to hold onto the beauty of the blooms all season long.

This project is full of variations to try as your materials present themselves.

Paper Cherry Blossom Variations

Thankfully, there are so many types of paper you can use for this project. I enjoy the 2-step process of decorating the coffee filters, but you could skip this and go right to construction phase!

Try making your paper cherry blossoms from:

  • Pink and white tissue paper
  • Pink crepe paper
  • Pink wrapping paper
  • Pink fabric - I'll be posting my fabric cherry blossom wreath post, but in the meantime, here is how to make fast and easy fabric flowers.

Cherry Blossom Basics

I'm working with white coffee filters that have been colored with pink marker, then blotted with a damp paper towel to blend the ink and give it a water color look.

I then lay out the coffee filters - 10 in all - and let them dry overnight.

I do love an immediately gratifying project, of course, but this is definitely worth the wait as the watercolor effect is just lovely.

I've used the same coffee filter water color technique with my ballerinas in this tablescape project.

If you click on the link(s) above you'll see what rainbow colors and different marker combinations can do. Fun!

Branching Out

For these paper cherry blossom branches you can use whatever type of branch or twig you can find in your yard, at the park, from the grocery store or craft supply.

I'll be foraging at the park for mine! wreath base you have on hand.

When selecting your branches, choose ones that have enough space between the little twigs to allow you to work easily with your glue gun.

It will make your project easier if you have space to place your paper cherry blossoms a few inches apart with your hot glue.

Consider a few different lengths of branches so you can create an appealing arrangement.

Remember the rule of three in your composition.

Start with a tall branch and decrease by thirds as you layer in additional branches.

How To Easily Make Paper Cherry Blossom Branches

[Please refer to my video above for ease in construction.]

To make your paper cherry blossoms, start by taking one of your pink watercolored (or other pink soft and pliable paper) coffee filters and cutting it into quarters.

Each quarter of the coffee filter will be a blossom.

Use this calculation to determine how many blossoms you will need to fully cover your branches to your liking.

Take one section of your coffee filter and roll the pointy triangle tip up about half way.

Now turn that 90 degrees and wrap the frilly edge (outer) of the coffee filter around the 'stamen' that you rolled from the point.

Use your hot glue to secure this bloom.

There will be a small 'hole' that you can insert a branch into or simply glue the bloom directly onto the shaft of the branch.
