May Day Herbal Tea Gift Surprise | Includes Printable
May Day is such a fun holiday to share with friends and neighbors. It's rarely expected and always appreciated. My May Day herbal tea gift surprise is an easy and super way to celebrate.
I found a few materials in my garage and online that when put together send the same sentiments and are a delight to behold!
I love the idea of giving the gift of a peaceful cup of tea. Granted, the seeds, pots and soil, require a bit of effort to grow.
However, in this uncertain time, I find that the process of tending a small window (or outdoor container) garden can provide some comfort.
In just a few weeks, your herbal tea gift surprise recipient will see growing sprouts and when harvest time comes, combine to steep for a tasty cup of tea.
May Day Magic
Traditionally, May Day is a feast day to welcome spring. Giving a token of spring - flowers or sweets - anonymously to neighbors and friends - is a way to ring in the season.
You may have also seen Maypole dances and what a joy!
Here is the most charming Maypole dance video from a school in Pennsylvania that has been hosting this celebration since 1929 and dancing this choreography annually since 1970.

Does your community or school have a similar tradition? I want to organize a maypole making project at our school and do a similar program for our spring fund raiser.
Wouldn't this be fun for the students and their families?

May Day Herbal Tea Gift Surprise
Find the materials and instructions you'll need to make your own herbal tea May Day gift for your friends and neighbors.
Materials
- Three (3) peat seed starter containers or other small lightweight planting pots. I used a trio of these 4" pots.
- Packages of herbal tea ingredient seeds. Consider the following: Chamomile Seeds, Lavender Tea Seeds, Lemon Balm Tea Plant Seeds, Catnip Seeds, Cinnamon Basil, Dandelion, Echinacea Tea, Fennel Seeds, Marjoram, Peppermint Seeds / Mint Seeds.
- Hole Punch
- Scissors
- Ribbon
- Happy May Day gift tags
- Popsicle sticks and herb name flags (optional, but recommended because they're cute!)
- Glue stick
- Floral foam (optional)
Instructions
To make your gift set, take one of your seed pots and either punch two holes in either side or use an awl or scissors to make holes in a plastic pot.
You'll use these holes to thread your ribbon to tie and hang on your neighbor's front door.
Next, select a few seed packets to include in your May Day basket. Nestle these seed packets in the top pot (of the three).
If you like, you can include a few popsicle sticks with my herb name flags as well.
Print and cut the herb name flags to wrap around and glue to popsicle sticks. Include these in your gift pot so your May Day gift target can keep their herbal tea plants straight!
I used a bit of dollar store floral foam in the base of my pots to insert the plant tags. This is entirely optional, but I like the way they stood up straight in the pot.
That's it! Traipse around the neighborhood with sunshine in your heart and share these sweet gifts.
If you like, include a little bag of potting soil with your gift set. You can bag this up and secure with a ribbon or assume that your neighbor can just do a little backyard or container soil digging.
Either way, enjoy!
