Paper Butterfly Materials

This high-impact, low cost project is exactly the kind of craft I love for holiday decorating!

What's more is your little butterflies can make as many as they want for just pennies.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Copy weight paper (not card stock as it's too stiff) or origami paper in your desired colors or colored coffee filters* - Even tissue paper would work if you double or triple up layers!
  • Sparkle stems or pipe cleaners for the antennae
  • Standard sized stapler (not mini as stapler arm is not long enough)
  • Scissors
  • Double sided tape or a hot glue gun and glue sticks

*Create beautiful butterflies using marker colored, dampened and dried white coffee filters that can be used in this craft.

In this blog post, I show you how to make cherry blossoms from the coffee filters I mention above.

There's a nice video that shows what I mean about the filters.

How To Make Paper Butterflies

If you are short on any paper supplies, then start by trying a butterfly in some scratch paper before cutting into your pretty and expensive paper.

You'll want to experience how to layer, staple and fold out wings.

When you're ready for prime time, cut 1 square at 3.5"x3.5" and another at 2.5"x2.5".

The large square is your upper wings and the smaller, your lower wings.

Fold each square in half and then half again. Refer to the video above for help if needed.

Now, with the folded corner on the bottom, use your scissors to cut an arc around the two outer square edges of your folded square.

When you unfold you should have a circle - approximate!

Do this with your other square and turn into a circle.

Next, with both of your circles folded in half lengthwise, layer the small circle on top of larger and align the folds.

Use a stapler to clamp a staple into the center fold (see video minute 8:20).

Now, let's poof out those wings!

When you have your upper and lower wings folded out as you like them, use a piece of double-sided tape to insert a folded piece of sparkle stem that has been bent into antenna shapes.

That's it!

Enjoy!
