Easy Ways to Create Wreath Decor
Ribbons and Bows
I love to layer ribbon of different widths to create a bow like I did for my butterfly fairy garden wreath.
With complementary colors, I can pull in the perfect tones to coordinate with the rest of my design elements.
To make this bow, I layered ribbon without cutting it off the spool and looped four times.
Next, I took a small piece of sparkle stem to twist around the center to cinch it.
I measured about approximately 18" in layered ribbon to create my tails.
Then I measured another length of approximately 2" to wrap around the center of my bow.
With a glue gun I wrapped the center 2" piece around the tails nestled up against the bottom of the bow.
Et voila, fini!
Butterfly Fairy Garden Wreath Materials
Here are the essential items you'll need for your wreath, but please feel free to add and delete based on your craft supply and unique design.
- 18" wreath base
- 4 yards - 3" wide wire edge burlap ribbon
- 1 yard - 2" wide burlap ribbon
- 1 yard - 1" wide coordinating ribbon - pink, green, blue, silver, whatever you like
- Small painted bird or fairy house - I touched up the roof with a little dry brush of brown acrylic paint for effect.
- 12 stems silk flowers WITH leaves - I chose these poppy style flowers from the dollar store. The leaves are a perfect way to camouflage hot glue under the fairy house!
- Sprays of balls and wispy greens
- 4-8 Paper butterflies
Here's How To Make a Butterfly Fairy Garden Wreath
Start by checking out this link on how to make paper butterflies.
Turn on your hot glue gun and have plenty of glue sticks at hand.
Next, wrap your wreath base in some lovely wide burlap ribbon with wire edges, if desired and secure with a little hot glue at the end.
As the ribbon is wired it will hold itself. I like to reuse wreaths so I don't glue anywhere but the very end.
Now, lay out your design elements on and around your wreath to get a first look at your creation.
Move elements around as needed.
Begin by adding your silk flowers to create the visual balance you'd like.
Now, secure a few leaves as a base for your fairy house and glue those all into place.
Prop up your wreath on a table against a wall and continue gluing your design elements into place.
I like this vertical design to ensure I'm adding elements that will be full and stand up as needed.
Adding glue as I go.
Create and attach your bow to the top. Create this through instructions above.
Now, use a little bit of floral wire, craft wire or a strong twist tie to create a loop in the top, center back of your wreath for hanging.
That's it! You're ready to welcome pollinating butterflies and fairies to your home!
