Self-Care Ideas to Celebrate Mother's Day
Self-Care Ideas to Celebrate Mother's Day
If there was ever a vocation that asked its journeymen and women to focus on the trip instead of the destination, it would be parenting.
Modern motherhood is a glorious melange of hard work, education - for ourselves and our charges - heart-bursting, laugh-inducing and tear-eliciting emotions, and so much more.
With SO MUCH GOING ON how does mom find ways to recharge especially in light of what we're all facing during Covid-19 stay-at-home orders across the country.
I'm sharing some self-care ideas to celebrate Mother's Day this year.
Seeing is Believing
In other years, Mother's Day might be spent with Grandma and other extended family, but 2020 presents a new landscape for celebrating the important women in our lives.
The first way to practice self-care is to surround mom with those she loves and who love her.
Consider setting up a online chat with family or friends to connect on Mother's Day.
Opt for a free 40 minute Zoom call or consider a Google Hangout or other platform.
Visually connecting with loved ones can boost endorphins and creates all kinds of good vibes.
Self-Care on the Inside
Regardless of community circumstances, practicing self-care through nutrition and hydration will leave mom feeling recharged.
Enjoy favorites and focus on rejuvenating foods and beverages that support rather than deplete.
Begin Mother's Day with a cup of something warm and nourishing, sip refreshing and detoxifying drinks throughout the day and treat mom with an evening adult beverage if desired.
Here are some refreshing and nourishing drinks to try:
- Ginger turmeric tea
- Citrus infused water
- Green juice
- Kombucha
- Veggie and fruit smoothie
Focused Time
Unstructured, but focused time is a gift for Mother's Day indeed! Take time to connect with thoughts that may be buried under the busyness of daily parenting life.
Consider this heart-centered self-care exercise of jotting down important parenting moments from the year behind and ideas for the year ahead.
Here are a few prompts to get mom's pen writing:
- A time when you laughed so hard with your child(ren) that you almost peed your pants
- A time when parenting made you cry because it felt so hard
- A time when your whole body felt lighter because you looked at your child and knew that you were in the right place at the right time with this small person(s)
- A time when you connected with your partner or friend over the joys of being a mom
- A time when you connected with your partner or friend over the challenges of being a mom
- What you most want to teach your child(ren) in the coming year/about you/about being a parent/about being a loving human
- What you most treasure in your child(ren)'s personality
- What else would you like to write about?
Walk it Off
Movement is integral to self-care as a mom. Treasuring the bodies that made us parents is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday.
Venture out for a solo or family walk that encourages observation, peaceful conversation and laughing.
Take the family pet if that feels right or spend an hour alone in nature and breath deeply.
Look around and notice:
- The colors of the trees
- The sounds of the birds
- The smells of the cut grass
- The breeze against the skin
Remember those natural qualities and when you're feeling too busy as a mom, use them to draw you back to a peaceful moment.
Beauty Sleep
Let real self-care start with deep, restorative sleep. Lounge late in the morning, nap and retire early if desired.
If children are young, ask for help in creating personal time to rest.
Time Out
Most moms know that time for oneself is a luxury.
Use Mother's Day to create dedicated time to do what nurtures and promotes self care.
Ways to spend self-care time:
- Read a book, magazine, old journals
- Watch a movie, TV show, video
- Call a friend on the phone
- Try a new skill by video or other platform
- Take a bath, shower, jump in the lake
- Give/get (from a family member!) a manicure/pedicure/hair brushing
What other ways do you like to spend time? Now, go do that!
Happy Mother's Day, friends!
