Shine Your Light Paper Advent Calendar Garland
Advent marks a time of waiting and preparation as we approach Christmas day.
This year, in particular, we are well acquainted with waiting-for back to school, a vaccine, and return to somewhat normal life patterns! I'm sharing my shine your light paper Advent calendar garland to spread a little lightness during the season.
With shorter days and cold, dark nights, the idea of shining a light that's cozy for us at home and others in our community sounds just right for the Advent season.
Read along below to see how I created this easy paper garland that you could string in your family spaces or invite you little elves to create for their bedrooms or play room.

My acts of Advent kindness is a lovely way to help kids shine their inner light during the dark days of December.
You'll find two documents below that list items to do and enjoy for the month of Advent.
As Advent aligns with the four Sundays preceding Christmas, you'll want to ensure that you've marked your four Sundays in your garland.
This will make sense when you review your calendar and read through the items on the documents included below.

Paper Advent Garland Materials
- Kraft paper or other heavier weight paper including card stock
- Scissors - standard and pinking shears, if available
- Printed Advent acts of loving kindness - PDFs below - or personalized
- Washi tape
- Embroidery needle
- Embroidery floss
- Small candies or other miniature trinkets to enclose in paper star pouches
- Jute twine or ribbon to string your garland
- Command hooks to hang
Paper Advent Garland Instructions
To make your own Shine Your Light paper Advent calendar start by cutting out your star shapes.
Please be as free as you like in your star shape design. If you would like to use a traditional star shape template, check this one out here at Max California.
Determine how many treat pouch stars you would like to include.
I don't include candy in our daily stars, which I think creates more of a feeling of surprise and delight when a pouch is opened.
I've done 8 star pouches this year or 25% of the days of Advent.
Encourage the kids to use their math skills when figuring out how they'll design your family's Advent garland.
Next, print and cut out the loving acts of kindness to include in your Advent garland.
Fold or roll each of these paper directives; paying special attention to the days that ask you to light an Advent candle - first, second, third and fourth Sundays of Advent - to mark with dates.
Use a piece of easy to tear washi tape to affix your acts of kindness to each start.
Then begin to sew up the pouches using your embroidery needle and floss in a running stitch.
Here's a great primer video on how to sew a running stitch.
Once your pouches are nearly sewn, insert a piece of candy.
When complete, begin to string your starts on your twine.
Use your embroidery needle to punch through the top of each star to string them.
Finally, find the perfect place to hang your garland to enjoy throughout Advent.
