This year, 2020, Advent begins on Sunday, November 29th, which gives you plenty of time to create this way to celebrate the season.

I've marked each of the special Sundays in Advent with a Greek cross with arms of equal length.

This cross form dates back to the fourth century and I love the idea of honoring this long tradition in today's Advent season.

How to Celebrate Advent as a Family

Regardless of your children's ages, it's a wonderful tradition to mark each day of Advent with something special.

Here are some ideas to carve out a little time each morning or evening to mark the day as we await Christmas.

  • Light an Advent candle together
  • Read aloud a Bible passage
  • Plan and carry out an act of kindness for a friend or neighbor
  • Read a page from a favorite seasonal book
  • Create a family Advent book and write down something each member is thankful for. Enjoy reviewing this book each Advent and add to it over the years.

Easy and Festive Advent Candle Materials

Here are the few materials you'll need to make your own easy and festive Advent candle for Christmas.

I like to purchase my supplies at the dollar store or simply pull items I have on hand from my supply bins.

  • Taper style candles in white or ivory
  • White tissue paper
  • Printer paper
  • Waxed paper
  • Desktop printer
  • Scotch tape
  • Hair dryer or heating gun - I don't have a craft heating gun so use my standard hair dryer on the highest setting
  • Candle stick(s)

Here's how to Make an Easy and Festive Advent Candle for Christmas

To make your own Advent candle, start by printing the PDF file you'll find below onto tissue paper taped to a sheet of 8.5" X 11" printer paper.

To do this, simply take a single layer of tissue paper that is approximately 8" by 6" or so and taping it down to your printer paper. The paper will print through the printer as normal, but your tissue paper will be printed at a 90 degree angle or perpendicular to your printer paper.

Once your tissue paper has printed properly, cut out the numbers to lay on the length of your candle.

With a small piece of scotch tape on both the top and bottom of your tissue paper, gently affix the tissue paper to your candle.

Now wrap a piece of single layer waxed paper of the top of the tissue paper.

This will allow you to hold onto the candle without burning yourself with the hair dryer heat AND add a little extra wax to hold the tissue paper in place onto the candle.

Now, take your hair dryer and with the high heat setting begin to run the heat on top of the waxed paper.

The wax from the waxed paper and the wax from the candle will begin to melt and seal the printed tissue paper to your candle.

Yay!

I count to about 60 and by then it's complete.

Try yourself and gently pull the waxed paper way to see the result.

Add more heat if you need.

That's it!

Now place your Advent candle in a candle holder to enjoy all season.

Before you light your candle each night please trip or gently rip any excess tissue paper off.

These Advent candles to await Christmas make lovely gifts for friends and family.
