10 Free & Fun Birthday Traditions for Kids
Thankfully, birthdays come around every year! Occasionally, however, birthdays can come fast and furiously and that calls for a plan to budget resources, time and energy. Here are 10 free and fun birthday traditions for kids that spark delight without sparking stress for you!
Balloon Wall
A fun way to fete birthday kids is with a balloon wall or a ceiling full of colorful helium balloons.
To create your balloon wall, blow up latex balloons and tape them to a wall for the birthday kiddo. For the helium version, simply fill up a bunch of balloons with helium and tie strings - or not! - surprise kids by filling up the family bathroom, which is both a small space to fill and a great surprise in the morning up on waking up.
Birthday Wish Comes True
Give the gift of Yes!
If you can do it, try to say yes to all reasonable requests. Don't tell the birthday kiddo of your plan, but be ready to make every wish come true. They'll never forget it! Until the next year, when you do it again, that is.
Favorite Meals
Plan family meals around your birthday kiddo. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be theirs as long as it balances out to a reasonably healthy day of dining.

Place in pancakes, set in lunchtime sandwiches and drop in dinner. Let birthday kids make a wish each time!
Prince or Princess for a Day
Our family dons a birthday crown each year. Make your own and bestow a prince or princess title on your birthday royalty. As expected, a prince or princess has others do their chores - remember Cinderella?! Give the birthday kiddo a day off for a fun for them and free for you treat.
You Are Special Today
Use the classic red and white You Are Special Today plate at every meal and enjoy the extra fun.
Birthday Banner
Create your own birthday banner to hang from your birthday kiddo's bedroom door or the dining room ceiling each year.
String twine or ribbon through fabric or card stock that's been cut and affixed with a birthday message or name.
Grandparent Time
Help create lasting memories for your kids and parents when you arrange special grandparent time. Carve out a weekend afternoon for one-on-one time at your place or theirs. Read books, play cards, bake and go for a walk!
Birthday Board Keepsake
Note all the birthday girl or boy's favorite things this year. Take measurements and create a fun poster board for them to hang in their room all year.
Birthday Dance Party
Pump up the jam and get your booty on the floor...today or tonight! Have fun playing your favorite standards and theirs too. Whether kid pop or classic rock, a dance party is always a great memory maker.
