DIY Personalized Baby's First Christmas Ornament

DIY Personalized Baby's First Christmas Ornament

What's more special and cozy than Baby's first Christmas? Not much! To commemorate this magical year, here's a sew easy baby's first Christmas ornament, embroidered on burlap for a super fast result that will wow. And you can keep the magic going every year with an updated embroidered burlap ornament.

It just takes a few materials and a little imagination for the baby, toddler, kiddo design and you're done. Would be fun to do this every year in the same colors or a rainbow or let little Miss or Master choose her/his own color when the time is right. Keep this idea in mind for Grandparent and Godparent gifts through the years.

Here's what you need for your Sew Easy Baby's First Christmas Ornament

  • 3" embroidery hoop
  • Burlap
  • Felt scrap 3"+ in diameter for backing
  • Embroidery floss
  • Embroidery needle
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Glue gun
  • Glue

Here's what you'll do for your Sew Easy Baby's First Christmas Ornament

Start by securing your burlap piece into the embroidery hoop. Screw tight the hoop so you'll have the easiest time stitching. Now thread your embroidery needle with floss and get started stitching.

I found it easiest to start by outlining the little swaddled baby, then working on the hat, then 1, then J-O-E-Y, finally the eyes in brown. I used a Back Stitch for this project, also used on my fairly popular Embroidered Burlap Tin Can Vases project. Here's a great primer on Embroidery Stitch Methods.

When you're finished with your embroidery, cut your felt scrap down to size and carefully glue to the back of the embroidery hoop. You could very easily make the felt a little smaller in diameter and lightly glue to the burlap to back it, but I like to cover the hoop seam and you'll have to be very careful that the glue on burlap doesn't show through.

You could also just leave your squared burlap rough for a cool shabby chic effect. Finally, tie your bow and grab an ornament hanger to hang your beautiful creation on your tree. Enjoy and happy, happy holidays with baby!!
