Kids Cargo Sheets
Do your kids' bedside tables overflow with treasures, books, rocks, LEGO and stickers? Mine too! The scene on my own bedside table is no better than the kids, but I'm working to solve the problem with these kids cargo sheets to create a safe little storage space for some of these favorite treasures. If you're not familiar with the concept of a cargo sheet, here goes. Cargo sheets feature a handy little pocket on the side of the fitted sheet to hold whatever a child or adult might want at hand as they drift off to dreamland: book, notepad and pencil, remote, chap stick, other things... They're fun to use and fun to make.
Here's what you'll need to make kids cargo sheets
- Fitted sheet
- Tape measure
- Cargo sheet pocket fabric - Junior lives for Star Wars and I found this fun print of his favorite heroes. Star Wars Fabric used and who knew there were so many Star Wars fabric options?
- Fusible interfacing to stiffen the fabric so it holds up to a bit of gear placed in and taken out
- Stick pins
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Thread
- Iron
- Scissors
Make your own Kids Cargo Sheets
Start by ironing your fitted sheet and determining your placement for your cargo pocket. I measured approximately 18" from the corner seam of the fitted sheet to start my pocket.
Now determine your desired size of your cargo pocket and cut fabric and fusible interfacing to size leaving 1" seam allowance to fold in and top stitch.
Fold and iron all four sides of your pocket and pin into place Begin sewing with a top stitch in coordinating thread color the pocket onto the fitted sheet starting with one side, bottom and the other side.
I reinforced the ends of my side seams with a few extra stitches perpendicular to my seam to ensure that they wouldn't pull out with use.
If you'd like, sew one or two extra seams up and down to create smaller pockets within the large pocket so small items like chap-stick or moon remote control don't get buried. That's it! Now fill it with treasures and enjoy the convenience of kids cargo sheets.
Remember to remove the treasures before you wash the sheets!
