Air Fryer Kids Dinner Platter with Salad
Air Fryer Kids Dinner Platter with Salad
We recently invested in a 6 quart air fryer and it is hands down my favorite new kitchen appliance!
I love the ease of use, super fast clean up and the food tastes delicious.
During the pandemic, the whole family has been pitching in with cooking duties and the air fryer makes it easy for our teen and tween to make tasty hot food for the whole family.
I asked everyone to carefully read the instruction booklet - short read! - to ensure safety.
Here are some of the top tips we've discovered through our HEAVY use of our air fryer!
Air Fryer Hot Tips
Ample Real Estate | Ensure great tasting, crispy food AND safety when you keep your air fryer 5 inches from anything else on the counter or island.
One Layer, No More | For best food results, only air fry foods in one layer. We have tried and failed to load up foods, but it's not worth the time you save for decrease in food crispy quotient.
Because the air fryer works so quickly, you can make a few batches of golden, crispy fries, for example, in the amount of time you would in the oven. Be patient, air fryer Jedi.
Pre-Heat | Unlike the oven, be sure to pre-heat your air fryer for best results. It takes just a couple of minutes, but you'll love the results. I like to turn on my air fryer to pre-heat and THEN prep my food.
Shake And Bake | Be sure to follow your air fryer beep prompts - there are a lot of them! - and shake the contents of the basket at least once during your cooking time.
Go Light on The Cooking Spray | You don't need nearly as much cooking spray while using your air fryer as you do with conventional ovens. Test this for your preferences, but start light.
Helping Kids Cook
Protect people and surfaces | Thankfully, children cook and bake with joie de vivre, which means that clean up is less of a concern that for most home chefs!
Cover up little cooks with pint sized aprons and cover cooking and baking surfaces with easy to clean placemats and other reusable protection methods.
Mis en Place | Everything in its place takes on new meaning with little cooks in the kitchen. Ensure that sharp knives and utensils are out of harm's way, but that safe implements are easy to reach.
Use secure step stools when necessary.
Teach Safety | Don't scare children with kitchen horrors, simply show them the safe way to operate around hot liquids, stovetop and oven and remind them to pay attention to spills that can result in slips and falls.
Have Fun! | Model a great attitude in the kitchen complete with an imagination and joyful approach.
Do this and you'll have dinner made FOR YOU in no time!
Kids Cook Recipes
Always supervise children in the kitchen, but let them take the lead on prepping, assembling and cooking when age appropriate.
Try some of my Halloween treats that kids can make. Check out the recipes here.
English muffin pizzas | Toast english muffins, top with marinara, mozzarella cheese and assorted toppings. Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted. Broiling requires adult supervision.
Chicken and cheese quesadillas | Heat a large flour tortilla in a pan, flip once when lightly browned, add shredded cooked chicken and cheese. Fold tortilla in half and cook both sides until done. Serve with salsa, sliced avocado and sour cream.
Stovetop macaroni and cheese | Cook elbow or small shaped pasta according to directions to al dente. In another small saucepan melt 2 TBS butter, whisk in 2 TBS flour until combined (1 minute), add 1 cup milk and stir for a few minutes until thickened. Take off heat and add 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese. Stir until melted and fold into cooked, drained pasta.
Enjoy!
