Do you like to send birthday and greeting cards? Me too! For many years, I've kept a birthday calendar - a 12 month calendar with lines for writing in the names of my nearest and dearest.
I am so lucky to have multiple names on some dates!
I learned to love giving birthday greetings from my Mom who has been religious about sending her pals and family happy birthday wishes every year.
It's something she's now known for and I love that quality in her!
In today's world of Facebook birthday wishes and a short text to send our greetings, It's a beautiful contrast to receive a birthday card in the mailbox.
I'm passing on these same lessons to my children as my Mom did for me. It's never too early to teach the kids to pause and celebrate a friend or family member. Creating a special moment of surprise and delight for others is what being a good friend, child, grandchild, cousin, student, and more is all about!

A birthday and special celebrations calendar is a great tool to use to plan out your family gathering too. Each month, plan a casual or formal, but always festive get together to celebrate all the special milestones in your family or friend group.

Classmate Birthday Calendars
Most classrooms celebrate students' birthdays throughout the year. My children's school has a beautiful tradition called a birthday book where instead of a cupcake or trinket, the birthday child receives a book full of compliments and sweet wishes from her/his classmates. Each page is a precious example of the gift kids can give each other through sincere and thoughtful praise.
With this classroom tradition, it's easy to carry on the fun at home. Let your kids create the family's birthday calendar to practice penmanship. Have them gather dates when they call Grandma and Grandpa to check in and tell them what they're up to.
Have kids create their own cards with craft supplies and store them in an easy to reach and remember location. And finally, post the family birthday calendar in a central location that kids can review and track to see who's celebrating next!
