How To Make a Tree Top Ornament Sweater

Start by gathering your supplies in the links below.

I found everything I needed on Amazon. If you plan it right you can score great deals on these items too!

PLEASE be sure to use plastic and NOT glass ornaments as they can crack and break when hugging your other contestants and I don't want them or you to be injured in this extravaganza!

If you're planning your win off season, you'll find super discounts late winter.

Once you have your supplies, follow these steps.

1. Cut 15 strips of green tulle to 48" long. Cut 6 strips of tulle to 36" long. You ave play around with these lengths. The ideas is that you want to create enough of a gather when you sew three strips together and then pull the thread to make a nice layer of 'branches.'

2. Thread a sewing needle with green thread or set up your sewing machine with green thread.

3. Sew THREE layers of tulle together the long way. DO NOT TIE A KNOT OR BACKTACK IF ON A SEWING MACHINE. You are going to create a gather on your thread, so you don't want anything getting in the way of you pulling the tulle along the thread.

4. Create your gathered ruffle in each of your SEVEN 3 tulle strip sections. To do so, tie a knot at one end of your three layer strips, then simply slide and gather the tulle along the thread. When you like the intensity of the ruffle (yes, intensity! :) tie a little knot at the end. If you used your sewing machine, use the same technique to gather and just select which of your two threads you'll gather along.

Here's a nice tutorial on how to make a gathered ruffle.

5. Now that you have your seven branch layers, start sewing them to your sweater halter or sweater vest.

6. Start at the bottom and work your way up making sure to evenly distribute your branches before sewing on. To sew, run a threaded needle through the top layer of your sweater, catching the tulle branch as you go. Knot to finish.

7. When you're happy with your branches and have the top layer complete, add a little green ribbon to finish.

8. Attach your small 1-1.25" diameter ornaments (or bigger if you're bolder!) to your sweater wherever you like. Simply loop a threaded needle around the top of each ornament a few times and knot at back.

That's it! You're ready to sleigh the day and win your next Ugly Sweater Contest. Let me know what you win.

I can't wait to find out! Happy Holidays!
