DIY Papel Picado Garland
DIY Papel Picado Garland
If you're prepping for Cinco De Mayo celebrations, my DIY papel picado garland is an easy and festive touch for your party.
Papel picado means 'pecked paper' in Spanish and I love the image of a little bird helping to make these pretty and festive Cinco De Mayo flags to celebrate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla.
Easy Papel Picado Flags
The only materials you need to make your own papel picado flags is crepe paper, scissors and a hand held hole punch. I used standard streamers with a lot of success as this style of crepe paper is thin and easy to cut when doubled or tripled.
Decide how long you want your papel picado garland to be and cut that length of crepe paper.
Now start folding the paper in half, half again and so on until you have a bundle of crepe paper that's about 3 to 4 inches wide.
Once you have your folded bundle, start by cutting the folded sides up to about 1/3" from the top. This allows you to have a 'paper doll' style garland once you unfold your paper.
When you have the folded edges cut away, begin cutting and punching shapes into your paper.
Have fun trying scalloped edges, classic style dots and fringe for sure!
When you've added your details unfold, hang your papel picado flags with a little washi tape to preserve your wall or other surface and enjoy!
