Classroom Valentine's Day Cards and Class Parties

My kids are older now and one of the things I miss most is the excitement for sharing Valentine cards in the classroom.

Generally, a full hour or more of organized chaos a 5-star Valentine's day party isn't complete without games, crafts, candy and lots of giggles.

A classroom Valentine's Day party is the perfect way to celebrate a holiday that lifts our spirits in the middle of winter.

I've been lucky to sharing in planning and hosting Valentine's Day classroom parties from preschool through elementary school grades.

And there are a few tried and true elements that I'd like to share for your use in future classroom parties.

Here are a few 'must haves' for any classroom soiree.

Craft station - Stock  at least one craft station with the possibility of two to three crafts that celebrate the holiday. These can be fun and easy upcycled projects. Ideally, the students will make something to bring home to share with family.

Game(s) - Prepare a game that involves Hershey Kisses and prepare to celebrate! Easy games get kids out of their seats, moving around and challenging their dexterity or wits!

Festive snack - Serve a snack that's on point with the Valentine's Day theme ensuring it's safe for all to enjoy!

Valentine's Day card exchange - Reserve enough time in the party plan to have every student distribute her cards to her classmates. Invite students to decorate an empty half gallon milk carton to serve as their 'mailbox.'

Score extra Valentine's Day points when you make the milk box decorating one of your craft station pursuits.

Tissue Paper Flower Card Materials

  • Candy! Hershey's Kisses, Lindor Truffles, Ferrero Roche candies - they don't have to have a flat bottom like kisses, but it helps to nestle them into the tissue paper flower.
  • Tissue paper - Yellow as used here, but use whatever you have on hand. This is a super project to use up old gift bag tissue paper as the crinkles are camouflaged by the folding. GREAT upcycle project!

  • Hot glue or craft glue
  • Pen for writing a note on the back

Here's How To Make Your DIY Valentine's Card

Begin by having your little bees write all their To and From notes on the back of each card that you have printed and cut to size.

You'll want to write before you affix your tissue paper flowers and candy for easy writing.

Now, fire up your hot glue gun and prep your work station.

Next, cut your tissue paper into 4" wide strips lengthwise in order to make your tissue paper flower.

Fold a piece of tissue paper gently in half lengthwise and with the fold facing the ceiling, fold one corner down to meet the bottom edge.

Now, with the point that you have created by folding down the top fold, start rolling the point in a few times towards the 'tail' of your tissue paper.

You'll have a small tab in the hand that is securing the point.

Hold this steady and start folding the tail of the tissue paper out and under, rotating the tab as you go.

You can use your hot glue to secure layers whenever you like.

When you've completed the rolling and turning, you're ready to glue your flower into place.

Circle hot glue onto your card and place your tissue paper flower down to secure.

Next, glue your sweet candy into your flower center.

That's it! You're done.

Enjoy spreading this sweet treat!
